Seiko Corporation
Seiko Quartz Astron—the World's
First Quartz Wristwatch—
Receives Prestigious IEEE Milestone Award

On November 25, Seiko Epson Corporation and Seiko Corporation are to be presented with commemorative plaques in recognition of the IEEE Milestone award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE). This Milestone is one that was awarded to both companies on April 26, 2004, for the Seiko Quartz Astron, a quartz wristwatch that Seiko developed and released to the world in 1969.
The award was given in appreciation for the
companies' achievements in the commercialization of the quartz watch. This development provided the impetus for subsequent proliferation and development of quartz wristwatches, and ushered in a new era in which it became possible for anyone to tell the correct time anywhere. Seiko is the first Japanese Milestone award winner in the timekeeping field.
The commemorative plaque is to be exhibited in the west-side show window at Wako in Ginza district of Tokyo from November 26 until December 9 along with a replica of the Seiko Quartz Astron. They will subsequently be placed on permanent exhibit at the Seiko Institute of Horology in Sumida ward, Tokyo.*
