Given that 2010 is the mid-point of the first commitment period (2008-2012) under the Kyoto Protocol, Epson regards it as a key year in terms of both national environmental policies and corporate environmental measures. Our Action 2010 Comprehensive Environmental Policy sets out the goals we aim to achieve by 2010, and in fiscal 2006 we are launching specific initiatives to meet these goals.

Epson Implements Worldwide Chemical Data Management System

In July 2005, Epson completed the introduction of E-chem, its intranet-based chemical data management system to all 34 of its manufacturing sites worldwide. The introduction of this system has created a mechanism enabling the integrated management of data on all chemical substances used in production processes throughout the Epson Group, as well as minimizing chemical hazard risks in all Group activities.

Turning Waste into High Quality Products

Epson's Environmental Policy establishes the recovery and recycling of used products as one of the company's major environmental objectives. In the course of the effort for achieving this objective, two Epson Group Companies - Epson Logistics Corp. and Atmix Corp. - began recycling the metal components of recovered printers and other products into high value-added metal resources; from that was born a new system for using these components as materials for new products.

Creating the Green Factory of 2010

Conventional production methods for semiconductors and displays require vast quantities of electricity. Epson is seeking to change traditional thinking by developing what it calls the "scaleable minimum fab," a new container-sized fab that is relatively cheap to set up, and which keeps energy use to a minimum. This ambitious project, which the company hopes to introduce by 2010, also requires that Epson reform many of its production processes.

Setting itself tough energy saving targets, Epson has dedicated itself to creating a "green factory." Product Takeback a Growing Global Concern

Epson Declares Solders 98.6% Lead Free*

December 2002
Electronic and electrical goods can cause serious damage to the environment. However, lead has long been considered an integral material in the manufacture of such products, especially in the solder for mounting integrated circuits (ICs) to the printed circuit boards that form the "brains" of electronic equipment. Epson is one company that has made strenuous efforts to eliminate lead from all its products, announcing it's the solders used in its products to be 98.6% lead free.

Radical Solutions for Saving Energy
