- TAIPEI, Taiwan, August 30, 2011 -

Epson has announced that Epson Taiwan Technology & Trading Ltd. ("Epson Taiwan") has once again been recognized in the renowned CommonWealth CSR Award. In a ceremony held on August 10, Sure A. Lee, director and president, Epson Taiwan, received the special honor of 5th place of CSR Award in the Foreign Company Category from CommonWealth Magazine. Epson Taiwan was recognized for actively promoting activities related to environmental protection, humanities, arts, and education over a long period of time. The company was the only Japanese prizewinning company to be ranked among the top five in the category, with its local efforts earning the approval of the jury.

The CommonWealth CSR Award is the most prestigious CSR honor in Taiwan. The criteria for appraisal include the amount of resources invested in CSR, the longevity of these efforts and their impact, with the local activities of foreign companies gaining particular attention.

Epson Taiwan's following efforts were highly evaluated:

  1. Helping enterprises enhance efficient energy consumption
Epson Taiwan has been relentless in its environmental efforts over the years, introducing in 2010 the Taiwan Energy-Saving Patrol together with the Business Council for Sustainable Development. Based on Epson's experience in the Shinshu Energy-Saving Patrol in Japan, the patrol team consists of 25 volunteers from several enterprises who visit companies and make energy-saving suggestions. At present, the team has completed energy diagnoses for 17 enterprises with annual carbon emissions reduced by 3,200 tons if all the suggestions are implemented. The greatest strength of the Taiwan Energy-Saving Patrol lies in promoting energy saving and carbon reduction among Taiwanese companies based on the experiences of international enterprises, as well as in providing professional advice and guidance on improving energy consumption efficiency and enhancing cost competitiveness.

  2. Deepening participation in humanities, art and education
In order to enhance employees' environmental awareness, Epson Taiwan actively promotes the participation of its staff in environmentally-beneficial activities such as beach cleaning, tree planting, flea markets, recycling, household power saving and carbon reduction. The company also established a GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Inventory, setting a goal of 5% annual carbon reductions. Employees are expected to work together to achieve this goal every year.
Epson Taiwan spares no efforts in promoting local humanities, art, and education. Based on the company's specialty in imaging, Epson sponsors on average more than 50 imaging art events on average per year. In education, the company promotes the Epson Projector Movie Fun Program in remote areas, so far holding movie events in 26 remote elementary schools.
This program enables students and residents in remote areas to enjoy movies, and aims to inspire creative thinking and enhance appreciation of the arts.

Both long-term implementation and local participation are essential for CSR. Epson Taiwan has pledged to use this award as a springboard to further boost its efforts in environmental protection, imaging art and education.
