Epson Printer Redefines Performance Capabilities for Pros

The Epson Stylus Pro 4900 is a state-of-the-art large format printer. With 10 colors of Epson UltraChrome HDR Ink, it is ideal for pre-press, packaging, design, commercial photographs and fine art reproduction.

Professional proof printer

Epson is well known for its consumer inkjet printers. Based on the company's proprietary Micro Piezo technology, these products have earned acclaim for their high image quality and reliable performance. However, in recent years the company has began to take advantage of the versatility, durability and image quality offered by this core technology to expand its product lineup in the commercial and industrial markets. Traditionally strong in printers for professional photography and proofing, Epson is stepping up its efforts to meet the evolving needs of its customers with innovative new products and technologies. The Epson Stylus Pro 4900, launched in late 2010, is an example of how the company is pushing back the limits of what can be done in professional printing.

When the Epson Stylus Pro 4900 was being planned, Epson was already the leader in the photo, design, and proofing fields of the 17-inch large-format printer (LFP) market. Although the general printing industry was in a slump, inkjet proof printers were experiencing steady growth due to demand from companies replacing existing units with products to help them achieve lower costs and faster turnaround. Epson's research revealed a strong need for such LFPs for use in applications including package proofing and indoor signage. The Epson Stylus Pro 4900 was designed not only to firmly meet the needs of existing customers, but also to provide a printing solution for package proofing customers.

Color accuracy and image quality

Color accuracy and image quality are the two most important factors in package proofing and commercial printing. To maximize the performance of the new high-performance Micro Piezo TFP print head, Epson's design team looked for ways to further improve these factors. Thanks to the addition of green and orange inks, Epson's 10-color Ultrachrome HDR ink set ensures a wider range of expression with the result that the Epson Stylus Pro 4900 possesses the ability to recreate 98% of PANTONE colors.

The team also put considerable effort into ensuring color stability and reducing color inconstancy. Thanks to the Ultrachrome HDR inks, consistent color balance is achieved regardless of the light source under which the print is viewed.

Automatic paper path switching

Customers often tell Epson that they want shorter print time and better proof efficiency. Previously, when customers wanted to switch from roll paper to cut paper, they had to manually remove the roll paper and pass the cut paper through the roll paper path, but the Epson Stylus Pro 4900 supports automatic paper path switching. It can even be switched remotely over the internet.

Automatic paper path switching requires both automatic feeding and automatic winding of the roll paper. Epson's first printer with an auto roll paper feeder sends the edge of the paper to the print start position with the press of a single button. All the user needs to do is load the roll onto the printer.

When the user switches from roll paper to the ASF (auto sheet feeder), the roll paper is still set at the cut-off position after printing, so the printer opens the paper path by automatically rewinding the roll to the standby position and then loads paper with the ASF. The ASF uses cut paper, so the paper is ejected when the print is complete. The next time the roll paper is selected, the roll paper is then reloaded from the standby position.

Greater efficiency

The Epson Stylus Pro 4900 meets customer needs for ever more efficiency by offering speeds up to twice as fast as previous models. With an easy-to-use control panel, faster cutting speeds, and versatile handling of almost any kind of media, it's no exaggeration to say that this product sets new industry standards.

Epson is proud of the Epson Stylus Pro 4900, and believes it firmly meet the needs of professional customers in a variety of markets. Automatic paper path switching and a rich array of attractive features have resulted in an LFP that provides users with superb image quality and unprecedented usability.
