Epson Starts Volume Production of New 0.6-Inch HTPS Panels for Data Projectors

HTPS panel
- TOKYO, Japan, May 31, 2006 -

Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") has begun volume production of high-temperature polysilicon (HTPS) TFT panels for its 3LCD data front projectors. Featuring D5 technology, the 0.6-inch panels produce XGA (1024 x 768 pixel) resolution.

The market for data projectors is continuing to expand amid growing demand for corporate presentations and increasing use of IT solutions in education. At the low end of the market, there is growing demand for XGA models that offer both high levels of brightness and low prices and are suitable for presentations in a wide range of business contexts. In response to such needs, Epson has produced a lineup of XGA-compatible 0.6-inch HTPS panels for front projectors that use D5 technology.

While offering XGA resolution, these panels make it possible to manufacture compact data projectors with high levels of brightness and outstanding cost performance.

Features of the newly developed HTPS D5 series:

1. Shrinks the size of chips used in XGA-compatible HTPS panels while maintaining superior brightness through the use of high-aperture ratio D5 technology. This technology makes it possible for a 0.6-inch HTPS panel to offer the same level of brightness as an existing 0.7-inch panel.
2. Like the 0.8-inch XGA-compatible panels already in production (which also use D5 technology), the new 0.6-inch panels feature less flicker and light leakage around the pixels due to double scan and frame inversion driving* and improved image quality due to the inkjet-manufactured alignment layer.

*Double scan and frame inversion driving: Data written into each pixel has the same polarity and is written in at twice the conventional speed. Polarity is also inverted before data is written in.

Technology D4 D5
Resolution XGA XGA
Panel size 0.7 inch (1.8 cm) 0.6 inch (1.6 cm)
Pixel pitch 14 µm 12.5 µm
Aperture ratio 57% 60%
