Epson Starts Volume Production of New HTPS Panels for Data Projectors

HTPS panel
- TOKYO, Japan, May 10, 2006 -

Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") has begun volume production of high-temperature polysilicon (HTPS) liquid crystal panels for its 3LCD data front projectors. Featuring D5 technology, the 0.8 inch panels produce XGA (1024 x 768 pixel) resolution.

The market for data projectors is continuing to expand amid growing demand for corporate presentations and increasing use of IT solutions in education. At the low end of the market, there is growing demand for low-priced XGA models suitable for presentations in a wide range of business contexts. In response to such needs, Epson has produced a lineup of XGA-compatible 0.8 inch HTPS panels for front projectors that use D5 technology.

While offering XGA resolution, these panels make it possible to manufacture data projectors with high levels of brightness and outstanding cost performance. Use of D5 technology enhances the efficiency of luminance and enables production of brighter, more environmentally conscious projectors, since HTPS panels can be made smaller while using the same lamp and the same resolution.

With previous driving technologies, image data was written into each pixel at a frame frequency of 60 Hz. This has been doubled to 120 Hz with D5, resulting in superior image quality including less flicker. In addition, previous driving technologies involved image data with different polarity being written into each line within each frame. With D5, however, light leakage around the edge of each pixel has been reduced by ensuring that data written into each pixel has the same polarity. (This is known as double scan and frame inversion driving. The effect of reduced light leakage due to double scan and frame inversion driving can be seen in the following photographs.) D5 also includes an alignment layer formed by the previously announced non-contact inkjet technology, which results in improved image quality.

Features of the newly developed HTPS D5 series:
1. Shrinks the size of chips used in XGA-compatible HTPS panels while maintaining superior brightness through the use of high-aperture ratio D5 technology.
Using a 0.8-inch HTPS panel, D5 achieves similar brightness to that of previous technologies using a 1-inch panel.

Technology D4 D5
Resolution XGA XGA
Panel size 1.0 inch (2.5 cm) 0.8 inch (2.0 cm)
Pixel pitch 19.5 µm 15.5 µm
Aperture ratio 68% 67%

2. Less flicker and light leakage around the pixels due to double scan and frame inversion driving, and improved image quality due to the inkjet-manufactured alignment layer.
