Epson Develops New HTPS Panels for 3LCD Digital Cinema Projectors

HTPS panel
- TOKYO, Japan, February 13, 2006 -

Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") has developed the first high-temperature polysilicon (HTPS) TFT liquid crystal panels for 3LCD digital cinema front projectors. Featuring D4 technology, the new 1.6-inch panels produce 2048 x 1080 pixel resolution. Shipment of samples has begun.

The cinema market is said to encompass more than 100,000 screens worldwide, and as digital content becomes ever more common the process of digitization is gaining speed in the cinema industry. Since the formulation of specifications by Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), a group comprising the major Hollywood film distributors, resolution of 4K x 2K or 2K x 1K has become the standard for digital cinema. This series of products targets the digital cinema business with HTPS panels conforming to the 2K x 1K DCI standard. Epson's high performance HTPS panels enable faithful reproduction of digital cinema content with high picture quality. Based on the 1080 pixel 1.6 inch HTPS in the existing D4 series, the new product achieves high 2K x 1K resolution to meet DCI standards on the same screen size.

Features of the newly developed HTPS D4 series:
1. Resolution suitable for digital cinema
2048 x 1080 pixels (conforms to DCI standards)
2. Compatible with 1.6" 1080P wide series
