Since the beginning of the 21st century, the digitalization and commoditization of products has continued to advance, and our business environment has transformed along with it. We are currently facing an economic downturn of unprecedented scope, one which has required us to re-examine our core values. To meet this challenge, we have resolved to uphold our core management philosophy of being "a progressive company, trusted throughout the world," by making full use of our diverse, innovative technologies and our world-wide sales and production network to quickly anticipate changing consumer, market, technological and social trends, thereby providing products and services that create indispensable value for our customers. This requires each of us to work as a unified team, ultimately contributing to the development of society.
A corporation, while an economic entity, is also a member of the community, as well as a corporate and global citizen. Epson's CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives are based on our Principle of Corporate Behavior to which all our employees adhere. By making these guidelines publicly available, we are able to share a common set of values with our stakeholders. Under the severe pressure of the business environment today, Epson has come up with a new long-term vision named "SE15" targeted towards 2015. By leveraging the compact, energy-saving, high-precision technologies that have been our strength since Epson's inception, and by shifting our resources toward business operations with strong growth potential, we will become "a community of robust businesses," thus enhancing our ability to develop, produce and deliver the products and services that emotionally engage customers worldwide.
Starting in 2009, and based on the three-year "SE15" mid-range business plan (FY2009-FY2011), we will integrate our goals, from the corporate-wide and department levels all the way down to the individual, into a single unified chain, and reconstruct our business foundation through unwavering mission and management reforms, enabling us to tackle the job of fostering new businesses that will become the next generation's mainstream.
At the same time, as we promote Epson's business activities, we will also endeavor to minimize our environmental impact while ensuring that every employee in the Epson Group maintains the same high level of passion for creating products and services that earn the trust and appreciation of our customers, in keeping with our Management, Quality, and Environmental Philosophies. And in returning to the fundamentals of sound corporate governance, we are determined to ensure effective management by maintaining a high degree of transparency and integrity.
